Encampments

In our re-creation of a sixteenth century Festival we invite re-enactors who specialize in various parts of society. They come prepared and eager to give you experiences that you might have had at Shrewsbury in the past. We encourage you to talk, play and learn with our wonderful partipants!

Our encampments for 2024:

  • The Royal Guard - find them at their camp for stories, laughs and fun.

  • Terpsichory Dance Troupe - [terp-sic-ory] They invite you to join in their dances! Find them on the Towle Dancing Green.

  • The Viking Encampment - Meet the Jarl, trade stories and learn their unique ways. Don’t miss their terrific Shield Wall presentation and story telling!

  • Weapons Demos by Bill - meet Bill and learn about period weaponry on the Front Porch stage (Court Pavilion stage on your program).

  • Sir Allan Grant - our resident knight in armor. Join the Knighting Ceremony at the Court Pavilion stage, in the children’s area.

  • Herr Karl and Company - learn about what it takes to be a knight and the code of honor

The Royal Guard portrays the Yeomen of the Guard, fondly known as the Beefeaters since their food ration was two pounds of beef per man per day. Their responsibilities include protecting the safety and well being of the nobility and ensuring peace at the Festival. Watch them try to corral our wildly active Lady Talbot, or find them at their camp for stories, laughs and fun.

Terpsichory is a band of followers of Terpischore, the muse charged with dancing in ancient times. They invite you to join in their dances, teaching you the simple steps or to sit back and watch as they amaze and delight with the complexity of their advanced dances. If circumstances allow, you may even catch them dancing around a real Maypole.

All dancing accompanied by the extremely talented Ravenscroft Musicke Guild!

The Viking Encampment is an education-based performance troupe dedicated to the heritage and history of the Viking Age. They promote education, cultural exchange and fun through active demonstrations and direct interaction with the Vikings themselves. Greet Jarl Aesa and her troupe, trade stories of wondrous adventures, and look for their mastery of the shield wall!

Herr Karl and Company teaches aspiring knights and others who are interested in the path to knighthood and chivalry inherent to the code of honor.

Sir Allan Grant wanders the grounds in his full armor, as well as offering a stage presentation about being a knight. He is especially fond of young children and damsels of all ages in need of escort. Look for him at the Court Pavilion for lessons in what a knight should know!
